Internet providers in Kazakhstan

Getting online

Most Kazakh citizens access the internet from home, as well as taking advantage of the increasing amount of free access at educational institutions, workplaces, libraries and public places.

If you’re renting accommodation in Kazakhstan, the likelihood is internet will already be installed and included in the cost of the rent. However, if you find yourself in the position where you need to arrange your own contract, you won’t have to worry about paying an extortionate amount for it, even though the competition is limited.

Main providers

The main internet provider is the national operator Kazakhtelecom, who have dominated the market for years. They are now starting to see an increase in competition from the independant provider Beeline, however, who offer more competitive prices.

Costs

KazakhTelecom remains the most popular provider, although its contracts tend to be more expensive than its competitors. For example, unlimited broadband contracts with KazakhTelecom start from around $20-$25 (USD) per month, whereas Beeline’s cheapest unlimited subscriptions start from $18 (USD) per month.

Censorship

Internet services in Kazakhstan are still somewhat restricted, with the government deciding which sites can or can’t be accessed on the main networks and banning content which they disagree with. Although it is not enough to be very noticeable, you should keep in mind that your internet traffic is being monitored and you may not be able to access certain sites.
